There’s a Spy in your Pocket

“There’s a Spy in your Pocket” is a playful, interactive data story revealing the hidden world of app tracking in Uganda.

Developed with Unwanted Witness, it combines research and storytelling to make complex surveillance systems accessible to a broad audience. Analysing 82 of Uganda’s most popular apps, the project uncovered widespread data collection—apps used an average of seven trackers and requested around 30 device permissions, often backed by long, opaque third-party policies.

The story brings trackers to life as quirky yet sinister characters, guiding users through how data is collected, shared, and monetised.

Using humour, visuals, and real data, it exposes the scale of digital surveillance and its impact on privacy. Since launch, it has helped thousands across East Africa understand how everyday app use can expose personal data, sparking awareness and conversation around digital rights.
