Humanising data, inspiring change.

In 2021 Data4Change coached partner organisations in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to collect new data on underreported topics and communicate them to wide-ranging audiences, cultivating and catalysing positive social and political change.

Life Under Curfew

A story that visualises data about the lives of people living in Nairobi’s informal settlements during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our project partner, the Social Justice Centres Working Group, held a live event in Dandora, Nairobi, to share the data insights with their communities through interactive data visualisations. Watch the video to find out how we did it.

Effective Leaders, Engaged Citizens

A story created in partnership with Twaweza, that explores citizen participation online. Twaweza’s rich survey data reveals how engaged citizens can make political leadership more effective. Visualising the survey data through a range of techniques including collage, the story encourages communities to take charge of their destinies by actively joining their leaders in decision making.

There’s a Spy in your Pocket

A disturbing story produced in partnership with Unwanted Witness that reveals just how many hidden trackers are in some of the most popular apps used in Uganda, what these trackers do, and why they’re there in the first place. A must-read data-inspired story for anyone with a spy in their own pocket.

The Future with Wakimbizi

A collaborative data-driven project that amplifies the voices of urban refugees in Kenya and Uganda. In July 2021 two refugee-led organisations, Young African Refugees for Integral Development (YARID) and Youth Voices Community (YVC), collected survey data about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their communities. This project uses data to step towards eradicating the existing barriers that prevent urban refugees from pursuing meaningful engagement, participation and survival in their cities.
