Their team consisted of Elric (front end developer from Uganda), Joachim (data analyst from Tanzania), Henar (graphic designer from Egypt), Emma (data journalist from Kenya).

At DATA4CHANGE HAKI Africa wanted to explore different ways of reporting the violence committed against the communities in the Mombasa region in the build up to the national and presidential elections that were held in 2017.

 

THE DATA

The project sought to highlight the growing trend of extrajudicial killings in the coastal area of Kenya. Between 2012-2017, HAKI has reported 89 cases of disappearances. Before the workshop the team worked remotely on Slack to clean the dataset which contained the date of the incident, the county location, the type of human rights abuse that occurred, the age and name of the victim and the current status. The team also were able to pull out powerful case study stories from HAKI’s narrative reports.

OBJECTIVES

The HAKI team wanted to create a project that would appeal to young adults who are either themselves victims of these types of violations or know family members or friends who are. HAKI works directly with young men and women aged 16-24 and they knew that to reach these individuals they needed to create a project that was easy to share on social media and WhatsApp groups. They also knew that they wanted to create a minimal viable product at the workshop as they knew that the HAKI representatives would not have a lot of time after the workshop to finalise the project.

RESULT

Capitalising on the team’s strong data journalism skills the team created a data-driven journalism piece using a number of data visualisations, strong photographic content and engaging copy. By using Shorthand the team was able to achieve an almost launch ready product by the end of the five days.

The name of the campaign is Sauti Ya Haki, which means “Voice of Justice” in Swahili. You can visit the launched project at hakiafrica.or.ke/sauti

 

The stories are told from the perspectives of loved ones who have lost family members under mysterious circumstances, often at the hands of police brutality. Beginning with the disappearance of Hemed Salim, the story shows how many people are currently deceased or missing due to human rights abuses in the coastal area.

The campaign combines data on general human rights abuses across the country, focusing on the different types such as assault, feuds, forced disappearances and sexual violence. Finally, an interactive map of the region highlights the number of recorded killings by HAKI based on their locations.

At the end of the story HAKI calls upon the community to share the Sauti Ya Haki story widely, to subscribe for their quarterly newsletter, and to report human rights violations through a brief online form to help in collecting additional data for their ongoing dataset.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP

After the workshop the team’s designer worked on ensuring that all the design assets were mobile friendly and together with the DATA4CHANGE team the project was launched on the HAKI website. A number of social media assets were created to promote the project and a printed booklet based on the project which was translated to Swahili.
