Mentors are a key part of all workshops, they come from both the private and non-commercial sector and are all experts in their field. Some of the biggest names in data visualisation came to Beirut in 2015 to share their expertise and mentor the workshop participants.
Wes is the founder of the data visualisation studio Pitch Interactive, responsible for a host of memorable interactive data visualisations including the drones interactive Out of Sight, Out of Mind. Wes has more than 19 years of creative and technical project management experience in data visualisation and his favourite programming languages and tools include Processing, D3, Three.js (WebGL), iOS, R, HTML5. He is the co-organizer of the Eyeo and Inst-Int Festivals,
Valentina is an award-winning designer, author, lecturer and occasional speaker. She leads creative workshops attended by children, students and creative professionals alike, including a series of Masterclasses with The Guardian. Her work takes many forms, from theatre production and exhibitions, to editorial content and interactive platforms. In 2013 she published The Infographic History of the World.
Hani is an architect and a creative thought leader with twenty years of experience. A graduate of MIT and Harvard, Hani is a founding partner of Polypod, a multidisciplinary award-winning studio in Beirut offering integrated design services in web development, information design, graphic design, branding, architecture and interior design.
Farida is the Director of the Visual Social Media Lab, which brings together a group of interdisciplinary researchers from academia and industry interested in analysing social media images. She is a Faculty Research Fellow in the Information School at the University of Sheffield and sits on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Social Media.
Amanda is an independent researcher, writer, and visual content editor with a passion for storytelling via information graphics and data visualisation. Before starting her own business, Amanda was the Art Research Editor at National Geographic magazine where she generated editorial content and worked with graphic designers to create artwork, information graphics, and maps for the magazine’s print and digital platforms.
Ahmad is a research and production partner with Visualizing Impact. He is an information designer and architect with a decade of professional experience, and is involved in all stages of infographic production. Ahmad has facilitated workshops with Mozilla Festival, Tactical Technology Collective and Columbia University Studio X and teaches an introductory information architecture course at ALBA in Beirut. Ahmad holds an MPhil in Environmental Design from the University of Cambridge.
Jessica works with Visualizing Impact on operations and project management. Prior to joining them, she was involved in refugee rights advocacy in the US, the UK, and the MENA region. She holds an M.Sc. in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor’s degree in international studies from the University of Kentucky.
Stina is Small Media's Director of Digital Media and Advocacy. Before joining them she spent over a decade working as a journalist and digital producer for The Independent, CNN and the BBC. At these organisations she spearheaded new media projects that used social media and user generated content to engage with audiences from all over the world.
Bronwen is Small Media's Director of Research and Innovation. She heads up the creative team, consisting of reachers, designers and developers and manages all in-house and external web and data visualisation projects. She has a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Melbourne, speaks fluent Persian and has written a book on underground rock music in Iran and speaks fluent Persian.
Richard is the Creative Director at Small Media where he oversees all graphic design, branding and data visualisation work. He is a Beirut-bred polyglot problem solver who has an affinity for Arabic typography and his work has been exhibited, sold, and published across the Middle East. He is also does regular DJ gigs in London and Beirut.
Sarah works at Silk.co in the business development team, where she works directly with organisations to help them visualise and make sense of their data using the Silk.co tool. Before joining Silk.co she was a Senior Legal and Policy Associate at Human Rights Watch. She studied International Relations at Brown University where she focussed on Global Security and Political Economy. She grew up in Beirut and eventually relocated to Brooklyn, she is fluent in Arabic, French, and Italian.
Yana is an investigative journalist who specialises in multi-platform storytelling on topics ranging from immigration to criminal justice and international social justice movements. She also works with organisations to build a community and social media strategy around projects. She is based in Chicago.
